Your wedding day might only last for 24 hours but it should be one of the most memorable days of your life. One of the major components that go into making this day what it should be, is make-up. Some people take it rather lightly, forgetting that the way you look is a physical reminder that goes into photographs and videos so that even your grandchildren can see what you looked like on that day. Here are some of the things to consider when you are choosing a make-up artist for your big day.
Portfolios matter! Go through their portfolios and see what they've done. It's usually more advisable to go with someone who has a more diverse client list.
Don't wait until the last minute to pick your make-up artist, spend time with him or her so you can cultivate a good relationship.
Look for someone who understands your personal style and personality. It will come in handy when creating the look for your day.
You need someone who is ready to listen to you and open to suggestions. An ITK (I too know) make-up artist will have you both arguing needlessly for hours on end.
Versatility in style is also a necessity. Someone who can switch from subtle to dramatic with ease and flair. You want capable hands, not a ‘Learner'.
Professionalism and firmness is a basic requirement. Your make-up artist has to be punctual and should be able to make decisions and stick to them. For example, if a particular shade doesn't suit your skin, he or she should be able to stop you from making a bad decision politely.
A multi-talented person is always a plus. In case your hair stylist disappoints you or makes a mistake, he or she can help correct that. They could also reduce your costs by providing both services at a reduced price.
Check your potential make-up artist's reputation. If possible, speak to former clients. You need to be sure you use someone you can trust. Make-up artists are usually around valuables, and you don't want to have to worry about missing items on your wedding day.
A cheerful personality is a necessity. There's a lot of stress associated with weddings, you want someone who will sooth nerves, not fray them.
Last but definitely the most important, hygiene. I cannot over emphasize how much of a priority this is. Lots of diseases can be transferred through make-up. Please ensure your artist is sanitary, uses clean and well disinfected brushes and instruments, has spare razors and cleans up whatever workspace they use after themselves.
So have a fabulous looking, stress-free day and may the force be with you!
