You don't necessarily have to follow the customs attached to engagement parties. Traditionally, it is the parents of the bride that host the party. Here, families of the bride and groom are introduced along with some notable guests. It is mostly referred to as an introduction in this part of the world.
While there isn't a laid down set of rules, an engagement party can sometimes be a 100% family affair. If your parents have agreed to someone else handling it, then you can start planning your engagement party by yourself. Here's what to do:
Have A Budget
Creating a budget is usually the first step. We would advise that you do your homework when it comes to this. For instance, figuring out the market price for foodstuffs, decorations and many more. Your budget will also determine the number of guests you're expecting or how extravagant you would like your party to be.
Set Out Your Guest List
As stated above, your budget does big work in determining the number of guests you'd be inviting. If you're working on a very limited amount of money, your invitees should mostly be your families and your core friends.
Choose A Venue
Most engagement parties are held in the homes of the bride's parents. However, in the case where you choose not to use your parent's house, you should plan out the place you'd like to use. Preferably, choose a place that will be suitable or easily accessible to both families.
Plan The Menu
Would it be strictly Nigerian food? Are you going to get the older women in the family to help out with cooking or are you getting caterers? Would your meals be a mix of intercontinental and African dishes? Whatever your preference is, this is the right time to plan out the perfect menu for your party.
Decide What You'll Wear
You don't want to do all that planning and forget about your outfit. Of course, you don't have to share any aso-ebi across the board since it's not the wedding. However, you and your spouse and even your families are expected to dress the part.
Have A Perfect Scene
What atmosphere or mood would you like your decorations to create? You can work with an event planner or look online for ideas that will bring out the perfect blend of scenery you want. Since the focus is celebrating, choose colors and lights that enhance that vibe.
All these should allow you to host the perfect engagement party!
