One of the most important factors that determine the success and longevity of your marriage is the way you relate with your in-laws. Most couples find it difficult to relate with their in-laws and as such this has a way of affecting their relationship with their spouse. Therefore there is a need to take deliberate steps towards fostering a good relationship with your in-laws.
1. Take out time to know them
You cannot just decide to stay alone and not relate with your in-laws because they remain a huge part of your family. Hence, get to know them. Relate with them as often as possible, build a good communication base with them and hopefully, it should go well from there.
2. Have a limit
It is important to know when to draw the line when relating with your in-laws. Do not disclose everything that is happening between you and your spouse. This will prevent them from interfering in things that have to do with you and your spouse, and as such, they will learn to respect your family.
3. Overlook possible issues
Learn to overlook things and don't hold a grudge. If your in-laws did something offensive, you could discuss the matter with your spouse who may have a better understanding of the issue or approach your in-law peacefully to explain things to them.
4. Appreciate their good side
We all are not perfect, and as such we have our awesome side and our not so good side. Therefore, instead of always looking at your in-law's not so awesome side, you should always look at their good side and appreciate them for that.
5. Give it time
Finally, when you have done all things to have a good relationship with your in-laws and things are not working as planned. The next step is to give it time and not force things. Always remember, it takes time to build a good relationship.
