5 Reasons You Should Never Wear White to a Wedding

Its another Saturday in Lagos and you are thinking of the endless possibilities of what dress to strut into that wedding reception with. You are also contemplating a certain cut of dress because you need to update your Instagram feed. Take that picture next to the flower wall, swipe for the “lark” or “reyes” filter and type in that hashtag: #applypressure2019; do it without wearing white.

Here are five reasons why you should never wear white to a wedding:

  • Non-Traditional Brides

Some brides may opt to wear brighter or darker colours and forgo being associated with the fresh, virginal notion of wearing white on the day of the wedding. However, a guest may be mistaken as the bride for wearing white, especially to people that haven’t met the bride before.

  • Attention Seeker

Most brides wear white on their wedding day; anyone else that does may be perceived to be seeking attention either because of some unfinished business with the groom or purely for propaganda. In this part of the world, pure propaganda seems very possible because women openly plan to look very nice at weddings.

  • Stains

The Amala and Gbegiri, stew, small chops, peppered fish, chocolate sauce, flying shaki and red wine. The possibilities of getting stained while enjoying the most delicious meals and drinks at a wedding reception are endless. Someone who is secretly jealous of how nice you look or loathes the fact that you wore white to a wedding may cause a little “accident” so wearing white to a wedding is just not worth the heartache and potential misery. Save that sexy white number for that all-white party during Christmas or even when you’re away on holiday to the Caribbean’s.

  • Dress Code Rebel

Some traditional or white weddings pick white as the aso-ebi colour for a special group of friends or family of the couple. In this case, if you aren’t amongst those groups, then it will be very odd for you to come through to the wedding donning a complete set of white couture lace. Doing this would even make you stand out more like a rebel.

  • Upstaging the Bride

It is general knowledge that most people wish to get married only once and so the wedding and all the outfits worn on the day are considered very special. It’s the ultimate time to shine as a bride; as a guest, you should give the bride that privilege of shining!

There you have it, just don’t wear white to a wedding unless you are trying to prove a point, however, a dress that is white with various colour blends may be acceptable.
