A little over a year ago (September 2009), fate brought Maryam and Sherif together at a mutual friends home, on a day that neither one of them had planned to be there.
With almost instant fireworks, they began dating about a month after they met and quickly decided they wanted to settle down with each other. Sherif took the next step by asking her parents for their blessing May 2010 and proposed to Maryam on the 16th of June, just a month after, with all the elements of romance, surprise and of course the perfect ring.
Their three day lavish ceremonies glowed in a kaleidoscope of Maryam's favourite colours and was spread across multiple states, Fatiha in Yola, Adamawa, Dinner in Kaduna (Purple and Green) and, reception in Lagos (Orange and Gold) where R&B crooner Donell Jones serenaded the love birds (pictures included for Lagos event only).
"..It took about four to five months. I had an army at hand to help with the planning. My lovely mothers Hajia Asiya Tukur and Hajia Bola Shagaya. My sisters, brothers and very good friends. I feel lucky to have such wonderful people in my life. They are truly amazing; I couldn’t have done it without them...."
Maryam's Advice to Future Brides
Surround yourself with family and friends and delegate. It is also important to stay calm and curb any bridezilla instincts.
If I could do it over...
I won't change it for the world, it was the perfect wedding. I had my lovely husband by my side and all our family and friends. We are very grateful to Almighty Allah for making it a success.
Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Shagaya!
