Hi Mr. Sugar, my fiancé proposed recently, and I absolutely hate the ring. I know it sounds superficial, but if this is a ring I am supposed to be wearing for the rest of my life, shouldn't I at the very least LIKE the ring?

I am sorry you hate your ring. Unfortunately you have neglected to tell me why you hate the ring. Consequently, it is difficult for me to advise you. When I was a young child my parents use to give me Christmas presents every year; on occasion I really disliked the gift, however, whenever I opened a gift I would smile approvingly because even a child knows that it’s the thought that counts. Be thankful that someone loves you enough to take that first step. Besides these days the engagement ring is not permanent. If you love him, marry him; with time let him know that the ring is really not your style but that you are appreciative of his commitment. In a few years when your social and economic status changes get the ring you have always wanted. Oh and for goodness sake get in there and suggest that you go shopping for the wedding bands together so at least you like one out of two.
