Ask Sugar: My Religious Status May Affect My Relationship

Dear Sugar,

My boyfriend and I used to be very religious. We'd go to church together and we even had days where we prayed and fasted. But over the years, I started to lose interest in religion in general. I felt it is very biased towards women, but mostly because of the issues I went through in church.

Every time I told him about my disinterest, he tried to convince me to think this or that way, to the point that I started faking it, but deep down inside, I just need a break to realign myself. Recently he proposed to me on our fourth anniversary and I said yes. I love him so much, but I am concerned that I may be choosing a life I am currently not ready for. Please advice.

Keep me Anon

Dear Anon,

Having to make tough decisions like this can be really confusing. On one hand, you're in love and happy with your partner, on the other, you're battling with a lot of confusion. It is very necessary to pause a bit and rethink everything. Since your disinterest in religion seems strong, you'd have to retell your story to your spouse, this time, with a lot of intent.

Since you intend to spend the rest of your lives together, you must start with a clear state. Open up about your current ideals and extend your proposal so that you and him to settle into your ''new'' life.

You must also be prepared for anything, especially if he is unwilling to compromise with your ideals. It is a tough but important journey you must make to help you avoid any regrets.

In all, whatever decision you make, ensure it comes from deep within and stand firm on it.

Wishing you all the best,

Love,

Sugar.
